Fire Department

The Sedalia Fire Department (SFD) is dedicated to the protection of the residents and businesses of Sedalia and to those who visit our beautiful city. The Department protects the 18.7 square miles of Sedalia from its Central Station on South Hancock Avenue and from its Headquarters Station across from the State Fairgrounds on West 16th Street. The City of Sedalia currently holds an ISO Class II rating. The Department consists of forty-two dedicated, professional firefighters and is led by Chief Matthew Irwin.

SFD responds to structure fires, natural cover fires, vehicular accidents, technical rescues, emergency medical events and any other emergency events that happen within the city of Sedalia, as well as provides mutual aid to other fire departments when requested. SFD operates two engines, one areal platform, one squad unit, one brush truck, two reserve engines and one reserve areal ladder, as well as various support vehicles. In addition to fire suppression and rescue services, SFD offers fire safety education, monitors city fire safety codes, and conducts fire cause investigations. After all, the best fire protection any city can provide is preventing the fire in the first place.

In addition to serving the 20,430 residents of Sedalia, SFD provides mutual aid to protect the 19,691 non-city residents of Pettis County. SFD also provides mutual aid to the Missouri state capital in Jefferson City, sixty miles to the east. The same aid is extended to the personnel of Whiteman Air Force Base twenty miles to the west.

SFD also provides protection for the Missouri State Fairgrounds. The Missouri State Fair attracts nearly 400,000 visitors annually and occupies a 150-acre site that is contained completely within the city limits of Sedalia. The Fairgrounds host events year-round in the various buildings and facilities on the property. SFD has a station located within 150 feet of the Fairground's main entrance to support operations at the Missouri State Fairgrounds.

There are two things that Sedalia firefighters hold dear. One is their symbol, the Maltese Cross, and the other is the price paid by those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service of their community. The Cross is the firefighter's symbol of protection. It is their badge of honor, and represents that they will sacrifice anything for your safety, including their own life.

The Sedalia Firefighters' Memorial was erected in Liberty Park in 2009 and represents the second symbol of service. This memorial honors those who have given their lives while protecting Sedalia and the surrounding community. It also lists those who have retired from service and have since passed dating back to 1887. But the City of Sedalia would again like to honor those who have given their lives in the line of duty by listing their names here:

William Collins 07/13/1937

Lee May 09/25/1957

Edward Shine 12/03/1971

Rick Morris 04/17/2008

Gone but never forgotten.
