This is a part-time position scheduled Monday-Friday, mid-March to mid-November, with varied hours, weather permitting. This position will landscape projects; work landscape work sites; participate in planting, transplanting, removal, trimming, pruning, spraying, fertilizing & maintenance of trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals; diagnoses plant problems and assists in their control measures; operates equipment as assigned.

Job Scope:
Responsible for the appearance of trees, shrubs, plants and foliage for assigned landscaped areas within the Parks System or other properties assigned by the City of Sedalia
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Assists in landscape construction activities and day-to-day grounds maintenance in parks & medians.
2. Transplants/propagates seedlings, cuttings, slips & plants in a greenhouse.
3. Operates skids steer loader and pickup trucks for landscape maintenance work as assigned.
4. Trims and prunes trees and shrubs in the parks with effective/safe use of a chainsaw, handsaw, hand pruners, pole pruners, and a pole saw.
5. Treats and/or disposes of dead and diseased trees, shrubs, and other plant materials through the effective/safe use of hand saw, chainsaw, or pesticide sprayer.
6. Sprays landscape areas for weed abatement with potentially hazardous chemicals.
7. Performs maintenance and minor repair of weed-eaters, hedge trimmers and other small equipment.
8. Organizes landscape work sites as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. High School diploma or GED.
2. Minimum of one year experience using hand tools and knowledge of plant care.
3. Missouri driver’s license.
4. Must successfully complete a pre-employment background check, drug screen, and agree to be subject to on-going random drug screens throughout employment.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Plants and trees; ability to identify a variety of plant material.
2. Plant diseases, insect problems, and appropriate control measures.
3. Knowledge & ability to apply proper tree, shrub & plant pruning principles.
4. Assist landscape staff with hands-on approach in fulfilling landscaping requirements.
5. Skills and knowledge of safely and effectively using standard materials, tools, and equipment required in arboriculture and landscape trade, including: chainsaws, hand saws, pruners, hedge shears, roto-tillers, sprayers, water pumps, shovels, rakes, hoes, pick-up trucks, trucks with lift gates, skid steer loader, and tractors.
6. Preventative maintenance and minor repair of equipment.
7. Respond to emergency situations, such as severe storm events.

2. Safety regulations, ISA guidelines that require judgement, selection, and interpretation in application.
Complexity:
Inclement weather and the need to schedule work around the public use of parks and facilities contribute to the complexity of the work.

Physical Demands:

The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee may be required to lift light and heavy objects up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, bend and stoop for long periods of time and should be able to distinguish between shades of color.
Work Environment:
The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee may be exposed to dust, pollen, a variety of insect stings and bites, cuts; subject to a variety of extreme weather conditions; susceptible to mechanical hazards associated with equipment; may be exposed to hazardous chemicals associated with weed control or greenhouse insect control. Works in and around heavy equipment and traffic. Must have home or cell phone in employee’s name and reliable transportation.
