Washington Street Bridge Will Close for Permanent Repairs on Friday, October 25, 2024
In February 2024, during a routine inspection, Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) bridge inspectors discovered significant issues with the Washington Street Bridge over the railroad tracks. Due to the severity of the findings, the City of Sedalia immediately closed the bridge to all traffic to ensure public safety.
The City has since partnered with HDR, Inc. to develop a comprehensive plan for repairs. Inititally, the bridge was reopened to allow northbound traffic only, but the goal is to restore two-way traffic. As part of the first phase of this work, City crews are addressing corrosion by removing paint and rust from the bridge’s substructure. While this preliminary work is underway, HDR, Inc. is finalizing detailed plans and specifications for the necessary repairs.
Emergency responders will continue to use previously established tactics to ensure a quick and efficient response to emergencies north of the railroad tracks. These measures are in place to guarantee that in the event of an emergency, help will arrive in a timely manner.
Although no exact date for the full reopening has been set, it is anticipated that the bridge will open to two-way traffic by late summer 2025. We appreciate your understanding as we work diligently to complete these repairs with safety and efficiency in mind.
